Markout for MAC

Free, open-source native Markdown editor for Mac with live preview, math, Mermaid diagrams and HTML/PDF export, all working offline.

Markout Overview

Markout is a native Markdown editor for macOS, built as a spiritual successor to the no longer maintained MacDown. You write plain text on one side and see the rendered result on the other, with a live preview that follows your scrolling. The preview supports GitHub-Flavored Markdown, syntax-highlighted code, TeX math with KaTeX and diagrams with Mermaid, and everything runs offline: the rendering engines are built into the app, so your documents are never sent anywhere.

Markout is built with SwiftUI and is made by maxmilian. It is free and open source under the MIT license. Version 0.3.0 adds native window tabs, a welcome window with recent documents and its own recent-documents list. Markout needs macOS 14 or later; the developer recommends an Apple Silicon Mac. The app is ad-hoc signed but not notarized by Apple, so macOS shows a warning the first time: right-click Markout.app and choose Open, or clear the quarantine flag in Terminal with xattr -cr /Applications/Markout.app.
